Spiny Flower Mantis – Pseudocreobotra wahlbergi

A tiny blossom with a big personality.

The Spiny Flower Mantis is one of the hobby’s most iconic miniature jewels—compact, vividly patterned, and full of expressive charm. Native to warm, flower‑rich regions of sub‑Saharan Africa, this species has evolved extraordinary floral mimicry: petal‑shaped limbs, soft pastel tones, and the unmistakable spiral eyespot displayed proudly on each adult wing.

Nymphs begin life as bold, jet‑black little hunters, gradually revealing their greens, yellows, pinks, and creams as they mature. Adults are wonderfully ornamental, often looking as though they’ve stepped straight out of a bouquet. When threatened, they unfurl their wings to reveal the dramatic spiral pattern—a natural “back off” signal that never fails to impress.

Despite their delicate appearance, Spiny Flower Mantises are confident, fast, and enthusiastic feeders. They thrive in warm, well‑ventilated enclosures with plenty of perches and visual texture, making them ideal for decorative setups and display enclosures. Their small size and striking behaviour make them a favourite among both beginners and seasoned collectors.

A living flower with attitude—perfect for keepers who love colour, character, and a touch of theatrical flair.
