Polyspilota aeruginosa — Madagascan Marbled Mantis

A striking, variable, and highly sought‑after species native to Madagascar and wider sub‑Saharan Africa, Polyspilota aeruginosa is known for its marbled colouring, impressive size, and bold, bark‑hugging presence. Adult females reach around 8 cm, with males slightly smaller at 6–7 cm, making them one of the more substantial display mantises in the hobby.

Appearance & Colouration

This species is famously variable: individuals range from green and brown to rose‑tinted or yellowish hues, often with distinct marbled wing patterns and a vigorous green border along the wing edges. A black spot on the inside of the forearms is a reliable identifying feature.

Their slender, elongated build and bark‑like patterning make them exceptional at camouflage, blending seamlessly into tree trunks and sun‑exposed branches.

Polyspilota aeruginosa occurs across Madagascar, West Africa, and sub‑Saharan regions, thriving in bushes, trees, sparsely vegetated areas, and sun‑exposed woodland habitats.

In the wild, they are a conspicuous species in wooded areas, often found perched vertically against bark.

Behaviour & Temperament

This mantis is highly aggressive, both toward prey and other mantises. They are fast, reactive hunters with strong raptorial forelegs and excellent vision, making them a dynamic species to observe.

Feeding

A powerful predator, P. aeruginosa readily takes on large feeder insects such as roaches. Their size and speed make them capable of tackling more challenging prey compared to smaller mantis species.
