Discover the enchanting Hierodula sp. "Sulawesi" - Yellow-bellied Mantis, a stunning species found on Sulawesi, an Indonesian island east of Borneo, known for its long peninsulas radiating from a mountainous centre. This exotic mantis, quite new to the hobby in the UK, brings a touch of uniqueness to any collection.
This beautiful medium sized mantis has a reasonably wide tolerance range with temperatures from 25-32C during the daytime and as little as 20C at night. Their tolerance levels also extend to humidity with 65-95%.
Preferred levels; Temperature of 26C, humidity level of 75-80%
Very food aggressive nymphs taking a large selection of food types easily as nymphs are larger than most.
Will take flies, cockroaches (red runner nymphs suggested), maggots, mealworms and other items (we strongly advise against crickets). A varied diet is always the best option, so try not to feed your new friend with just one choice.
An enclosure of 10" (25 cm) in height and 6" (15 cm) wide sufficient for adults but the bigger, the better. If the enclosure is quite large then feeding with tong may be necessary to ensure the mantis is catching food.
Please note: Mantis do not eat to your regime, temperatures affect an insect’s metabolism greatly, which dictates their requirement for nourishment. Viewing their abdomen is the best and only intelligent way to decide if your mantis requires food. Overfeeding a mantis can result in abdominal ruptures and death, so it is always best to gauge your mantis’s hunger level by its girth. A flat-bodied mantis needs feeding. If you can see the membrane between the segments on the underside of the abdomen, then the mantis is full, and you should wait before offering more.
