⚪🦈 Cubaris “White Shark” Isopod

A rare, tricolour dwarf species with the attitude of a predator and the size of a thumbnail.

The White Shark isopod (Cubaris sp.) hails from the tropical rainforests and savanna edges of Thailand, where shifting seasons create a mosaic of warm, humid microhabitats. Despite its fierce name, this species is a dwarf-sized isopod, typically reaching just 1 cm as an adult—but its bold patterning ensures it never goes unnoticed.

🎨 Distinctive Tricolour Pattern

White Sharks are instantly recognisable by their black-and-white body, contrasted with a striking orange or red face that gives them a sharp, “shark‑snout” appearance. The contrast is even more dramatic in groups, where their colours flash against dark substrate and leaf litter.

🌿 Native Habitat & Ecology

In the wild, these isopods occupy moist forest floors, rotting wood pockets, and the shaded margins of savanna zones where humidity remains high even during drier months. Their environment is rich in:

  • Decaying hardwood

  • Deep leaf litter layers

  • Microbial-rich soil

  • Moist refuges beneath bark and stone

This blend of moisture, warmth, and organic decay fuels their growth and supports their natural behaviours—burrowing, grazing, and clustering in tight colonies.

💧 Humidity & Microclimate Needs

White Sharks thrive in 60–80% humidity, mirroring the damp, sheltered microhabitats they occupy in Thailand. They rely on:

  • Consistent moisture gradients (from damp hides to drier surface zones)

  • Nutrient-rich substrate packed with rotting wood, leaf litter, and biofilm

  • Stable warmth typical of tropical forest floors

Their small size makes them more sensitive to desiccation than larger Cubaris species, so maintaining a well‑structured, moisture‑retentive setup is key.

🪵 A Dwarf Species With Big Personality

Though tiny, White Sharks are active, curious, and visually striking—making them a favourite among collectors who appreciate rare Cubaris morphs. Their compact size also makes them ideal for smaller bioactive displays, nano terrariums, and species‑specific enclosures.
